Under supervision of Industrial Design Manager or Senior level designer(s), the Industrial Designer Intern position is responsible for providing creative user‐centric concept ideation through the use of discovery research, data visualization, problem framing, sketching, 3D rendering, 3D CAD, and prototyping to support Product Management & Engineering Department on roadmap or new development projects. This position will gain valuable real life industrial design experience within a team environment that students can apply in their coursework.
Specific Responsibilities:
Use basic design theoretical principals, judgment and understand customer needs to evaluate and develop design concepts to meet project requirements under guidance from mentor(s). 2. Assist higher-level designers with basic design tasks and learn from their guidance. Support the design process of projects under their guidance. 3. Develop basic design skills, including sketching, CAD modeling, understanding of CMF, and understanding of manufacturing techniques and processes. Creating visual representations of design ideas through sketching or using 3D modeling tool. 4. Assist higher-level designers to prepare specific documents to document the design intent of each product. 5. Prioritize projects to align with the goals of the various project teams under the guidance of Senior Industrial Designers. Review the progress on all active projects on a consistent basis with mentor(s). 6. Basic interdepartmental collaboration with New Product Development (NPD) team members under supervision of mentor(s). 7. Assist higher level designers or NPD teams to identify trends and opportunities in the marketplace and have an basic understanding of CMF, manufacturing techniques and processes, etc. 8. Perform other duties as required within the nature and level of role.
Job Qualification Requirements
High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Qualified candidates must currently be enrolled in an accredited undergraduate program to be considered. Good knowledge of Sketchbook Pro, Adobe Creative Suite ‐ Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign. Basic experience using SolidWorks and/or Keyshot preferred. Basic knowledge of using Microsoft Office to include Excel, Word, and Outlook. Must demonstrate basic creative and analytic skills through traditional industrial design sketching, drawing or computerized drawing techniques. Must have good communications skills, verbal and written. Strong team focus and ability to work with others, both internal and external to the organization. Ability to work well in a team environment and communicate with all levels of the organization. Basic understanding to handle confidential information and to prioritize projects and tasks in a fast‐paced environment. Proactive to drive communication & be organized and detail‐oriented in order to be successful.
Occasionally required to stand, walk or sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
