Carlos Chang, an architectural designer with over 35 years’ international experience, is the newest instructor in Cedarville University’s Industrial and Innovative Design (IID) program. Chang, previously a professional adviser for the program, is now an adjunct professor at the International Center for Creativity (ICC) studios in Columbus, Ohio.

Cedarville collaborates with the ICC to offer this program, which includes four study tracks: consumer product design, transportation design, exterior space design and interior space design. Students spend their first two years on Cedarville’s campus, and then gain real-world experience at the ICC studios in Columbus.

Jim Stevenson, president of the ICC, said Chang is an asset to the program because he is not only a professional, but a leader in his field.

“Carlos brings a global vision of architectural space through his decades of experience that really expands what we can offer here,” Stevenson said.

Chang’s experience includes many years leading design departments for large architectural firms. Locally, Chang helped design facilities for Riverside Hospital and Grant Medical Center in Columbus and Washington State Community College in Marietta, Ohio. Chang’s international work includes medical projects in Turkey, Taiwan and Chile and residential buildings in China, Spain and Central America. In addition to teaching at the ICC, Chang now works as a design consultant with several different firms.

As a professor, Chang said he wants to prepare students to move easily in different design fields, so they can specialize however they choose. “That’s the beauty of it,” Chang said. “They are all related.”

Chang said he also loves to explore related forms of art and creativity. In addition to his professional design work, Chang paints in both oil and watercolor and plays classical guitar.

Stevenson said Chang has already demonstrated his commitment to helping students succeed.

“He spends time with every single student,” Stevenson said. “He’s very generous with his time.”
